Birds on a train

They perch above us,
on the roof of a house,
the corner of a building,
the top of an arch.

Indifferent or caring,
present,
like the garding angels of spring;
immortal in their uniformity,
invisible in their proximity.

Someone died. A person under a train.
They open their wings;
and they rise;
and we remain.
